Elementary Science Lessons

Elementary science creates a building block for all other science lessons to build on. In elementary school, it's important for students to learn to identify and classify organisms. Every organism belongs to a group. The members of a group share similar characteristics. Learning to identify the characteristics of leaves, seeds, crops, and twigs helps students learn to ask the appropriate questions to classify what they're looking at.

For example, if you're identifying a leaf, would you say it's broad (deciduous) or needle-like (evergreen)? How are the leaves arranged; are they directly across from each other on the stem, or do they alternate? There are many more parts of a leaf that can be identified, like the margins, the veins, leaflet groupings, the apex, petiole, and stipule. All of the parts can be identified separately by elementary students, which can lead them to classification of the leaf.

Studying all the tree parts helps students to identify the tree itself, through its parts. Elementary science students enjoy being detectives; they like to puzzle their way through the identification process. The lessons are fun, yet they provide a fundamental lesson for basic science. If science is perceived to be interesting and fun, it can lead kids to further study and understanding.
